Pretty devo with this book。 I love I am Pilgrim and thought it was extremely well written so I had very high hopes for this。 The plot just goes off the rails towards the back half of the book making it super unrealistic

Ten years ago Terry Hayes wrote and had published I am Pilgrim which became one of the most exciting and best selling thrillers of the decade。 Now， a decade later， his latest novel， The Year of the Locust， has hit the shelves。It had been expected some time ago but publication had been delayed several times for reasons that may become obvious to those， like me， who have read the book。 My initial response as I completed the last page was one of immense satisfaction but there were times during the Ten years ago Terry Hayes wrote and had published I am Pilgrim which became one of the most exciting and best selling thrillers of the decade。 Now， a decade later， his latest novel， The Year of the Locust， has hit the shelves。It had been expected some time ago but publication had been delayed several times for reasons that may become obvious to those， like me， who have read the book。 My initial response as I completed the last page was one of immense satisfaction but there were times during the reading of it when it was a bit of a slog。The basic plot is about the CIA hunt for an extremely dangerous Islamic terrorist。 In the first half of the book， most of the action takes place in the Middle East。 Some of the sequences are jaw-droppingly exciting but the spells between made me restless。 Then， without warning， the narrative switched from being a straight forward terrorist yarn to becoming a time-travelling thriller。 Does it work？ Boy， does it with a climax that is tense and thrilling ， compounded with there being so much at stake which would not have been possible without the sci-Fi element。The hero is amazingly durable and his partner a rock solid support with an an ocean of patience。 The villain is utterly evil and the supporting cast varied and fascinating。A fine novel。 Read it and stick with it。David Lowther。 Author of The Blue Pencil， Liberating Belsen， Two Families at War， The Summer of ‘39 （all published by Sacristy Press） and Ordinary Heroes （published by I M Books）。 。。。more

What a long - really long shaggy dog story this was。 So full of detail and diversions away from the main plot as well as a seriously strange final section which was pretty bemusing。 But I was totally engrossed and captivated and just had to finish what is perhaps the thriller of the year。

I waited for such a long time for this， I think I pre-ordered it in the last century so long was the wait。 It didn't disappoint， despite a couple of dumb and inaccurate references to UK and Europe。 A brilliantly crafted edge of the seat thriller， a real page turner，。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。 until， that is the author when to a party dropped a tab or two and tripped the rest of the book。 Seriously？ There was no need for the last 250-300 pages， it's nonsense made the book far too long。 no need at al I waited for such a long time for this， I think I pre-ordered it in the last century so long was the wait。 It didn't disappoint， despite a couple of dumb and inaccurate references to UK and Europe。 A brilliantly crafted edge of the seat thriller， a real page turner，。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。 until， that is the author when to a party dropped a tab or two and tripped the rest of the book。 Seriously？ There was no need for the last 250-300 pages， it's nonsense made the book far too long。 no need at all for the sub， the alien spores and the ridiculous time shift， it could have plausibly ended without it。 Credit though it was decently written and held the tension to a certain extent although the end did seem rushed with a hole in the plot line the size of the magical submarine just wasn't addressed。 Bemusing This seemed to be the work of an author who was under pressure to repeat the success and quality of I Am Pilgrim but lost his way when under pressure to deliver by the publishers and because he'd gone down a rabbit hole untethered just didn't know how to finish。 。。。more

An excellent readHaving read I Am Pilgrim a couple of years ago， I couldn’t wait for The Year of the Locust and pre-ordered it。 It didn’t disappoint; Haynes’ storytelling is exquisite。 For me， where it went slightly astray was in the last 20% of the book where it morphs from an espionage thriller into sci-fi （not normally my cup of tea）， but despite this， it’s still worthy of 5 stars and I’d recommend it to anyone。
